The best hybrids of tuberous begonias - my personal hit parade

The middle of winter is the time to think about the flowers that will decorate our garden in the coming season. Before you make a choice from the rich variety of tuber begonias, I suggest you get acquainted with my personal hit parade of tuber begonia hybrids. I have been growing this plant for more than 15 years and have gained sufficient experience. It allows me to highlight the most spectacular hybrids, their main advantages and disadvantages. In this case, I do not claim absolute objectivity. Nevertheless, my observations will help novice gardeners better navigate the popular bush type begonias hybrids.

The best hybrids of tuberous begonias - my personal hit parade

1st place - begonia "Picoti"

Begonia "Picoti" (Picotee) is the brightest type of tuberous begonias with unusually colored, huge-sized flowers. The prefix to the varietal name "Picoti" is usually obtained by plants having a thin contrasting rim along the edges of the petals. The same appearance is characteristic of begonias of this series.

Classical Picoti begonias are represented by two species: porcelain-white flowers with bright scarlet border - Picotee white-red; and orange-yellow with an expressive red border - Picotee yellow-red.

In addition, there is another subgroup. Picotee Lace ("Picoti Lace"), which is a kind of inverted type of similar colors. That is, if the classic "Picoti" we see a light basic tone and a dark border, then in these begonias the petals are painted with saturated colors, and a white border passes along the edge. The jagged edges of each petal give this charm an extra charm, making them really seem to be lacy.

The most spectacular and popular representative of this type is begonia. "Picoti Lace Apricot". The main difference is bright orange petals with an expressive white border. Such a combination looks so successful that it seems like we have a sweet dessert.

Begonia also exists. "Picoti Lace Pink", in which pale pink petals are trimmed with a white border. And in recent years, the line has been supplemented by a novelty - begonia "Picoti Lace Red" with dark red petals and a white border, but it is still not easy to find on sale.

The Picoti series is not only the brightest colored, but also one of the largest flowered forms. The flowers of these begonias can reach a diameter of 20 centimeters and even with abundant flowering! Once having seen this magnificent elegant begonia, it is impossible to forget it and it is difficult not to want to settle in a garden. Therefore, I decided to give the first place in my charts of begonias to her.

However, in addition to numerous advantages, it has a number of disadvantages:

  • requires support (bush height 30 centimeters);
  • I proved to be capricious in comparison with others;
  • in some years, more often than others, it was affected by pests and diseases;
  • often planting material is sold at an overpriced price;
  • not too bushy and for greater effect requires group landings.

2nd place - non-stop begonia

Begonia Non-Stop (Non stop) does not form giant flowers, like some other begonias. It belongs to the type of "multi-flowered". But the series is still very popular. I really liked this begonia and I, and every year I try to get all new colors. And her palette is extremely rich.

In addition to the traditional red, white, yellow and orange, the line offers very delicate shades: pink, apricot, lemon and others. The shape of the flower itself is also attractive because all the petals in the center of the inflorescence are noticeably shorter than the first row of external petals. Dense flowers resemble miniature peonies.

The size of the flowers is 7-10 centimeters, but on one bush at the same time there are a large number of flowers open. Another advantage is the compact habit. A series of hybrid begonias "Non-stop" forms very low fluffy bushes up to 20 centimeters high, which keep their shape well. Unlike other begonias with single long bare stems, dense bushes of this line, abundantly covered with flowers, look charming.

Recently, the Non-Stop series has replenished with amazing representatives who have a dark chocolate sheet unique to tuberous begonias. This series is called Non-Stop Mocha, but, unfortunately, it is not yet possible to purchase it in the form of a tuber. But the seeds of this line are often found on sale.

The Non-Stop series differs from other tuberous begonia lines in that a full-fledged plant can be obtained from seeds in just one season. Already in the year of planting, young plants will fully bloom and develop a tuber, which can be dug up in the fall and stored in a frost-free room.

All representatives of the line fully justify their name - their flowering is non-stop without any stops. In addition, this series is distinguished by earlier flowering. In my conditions, "Non-Stop" always blooms somewhat earlier than representatives of other cultivars planted at the same time.

This hybrid is ideal for balcony drawers, as it does not need supports and forms low dense, dense bushes. To be brief, this begonia is good in everything, but due to the small size of the flowers, I still give it a second place. Its only drawback, in my opinion, is only the small-sized flowers.

3rd place - Fimbriata begonia

Begonia Fimbriata (Fimbriata) is very similar to Shabo cloves. It will not be easy for beginning flower growers to recognize begonia in it, because its flowers are very lacy, airy and do not produce the impression of heavy ones, like in classic varieties. From the Latin language its name translates as "fringed" or "curly". This is due to the fact that all of its petals have a strongly indented, jagged edge.

The colors presented in this series are: yellow, red, dark red, pink, orange, salmon and white. In my opinion, light colors enhance the airiness and lightness of carved flowers, variations with yellow look most harmoniously (Fimbriata Yellow) and white flowers ("Fimbriata White ") The first with its bright yellow carved petals resembles cute fluffy chickens, and the snow-white Fimbriata Belaya is similar to light lace or frosty patterns.

But the dark colors look heavy. For instance, Fimbriata Red and Fimbriata Scarlet have a very strong resemblance to red carnations, which are often called "masculine flowers." The diameter of the flower of this series, regardless of color, is an average of 15 centimeters. Bush height up to 30 centimeters. From one tuber, as a rule, from one to three stems grow.

The leaf blades are powerful, with a velvety surface and have a dark green color, so that flowers of light colors look especially bright.

I believe, thanks to a very original thick-fringed fringed petals, this begonia deserves to be in third place in my hit parade. Minor flaws: the need for a garter, a tendency to stretch.

4th place - fragrant begonia

Fragrant begonia (Odorata) is one of the first begonias whose flowers are distinguished by a very pleasant aroma. Of course, this smell cannot be called strong, and in order to feel it, you need to come close to the flower. Florists describe this smell differently, and in my opinion it is associated with a sweet and sour smell of lemon cheesecake.

The most common hybrid is called "Angelica". It is very difficult to describe the color of the flowers of this variety. The main tone of the petals is pure white, and the buds have a reddish blush, with complete dissolution in the center of the flower you can also notice yellow areas.

The most interesting color - lemon yellow with small pinkish marks - distinguishes Odorata begonia Sunny Dream. Other colors of the series: bright pink "Pink Delight "red Red Glory and white Fragrant White. The structure of the fragrant begonia is reminiscent of the Non-Stop series - they are also not too large in size and rarely reach 10 centimeters. The edges of the petals are slightly indented.

Although, according to the classification, this variety is not classified as ampelous, the fragrant begonia flowers have long drooping peduncles, as in ampelous varieties. Erect shoots with a height of not more than 20 centimeters.

The disadvantages of Odorata begonia: small flowers, drooping peduncles (it is better to plant in hanging baskets).

5th place - begonia Superba and begonia Double

I decided to divide the fifth place between two hybrids, very similar to each other: begonia "Superba" and double begonia. Both of these varieties are quite worthy and have their fans. Most of all, they will appeal to lovers of classic "grandmother's" begonias.

They have a standard flower shape for terry tuberous begonias and a familiar set of colors. But for me, with such an abundance of more original varieties, these begonias seem rustic.

Begonia "Superba" (Superba) forms very powerful bushes up to 30 centimeters high with large flowers, which are sometimes characterized as "giant", up to 20 centimeters in diameter. Colors of the Superba series: white, bright red, salmon pink. The edges of the petals are slightly wavy, the terry is very high, and as the flower dissolves, the middle is not exposed.

This begonia blooms quite abundantly, but nevertheless the tillering of the bushes is weak and most often the tuber gives out only one powerful stem. Therefore, for greater effect, several nodules should be planted in one container close to each other.

Begonia series Double oval petals with a smooth edge, which are located relative to each other like tiles. In this line there are as many as three different shades of red: dark red, bright red and orange red. Other colors: yellow, pink and white. The most interesting colors of the series have various shades of light orange: copper and salmon. The diameter of the flower is 10-12 centimeters, the height of the bush is up to 30 centimeters.

Disadvantages of Superba and Double begonias: high, stony, stems, need for garter, standard appearance.

6th place - begonias of "Crisp Marginata" and "Marble"

I also complete my hit parade of the best begonia hybrids with two episodes: Crispa Marginata and Marble begonia, since both varieties are very original and, as they say, "for an amateur".

Begonia "Crispa Marginata" (Crispa Marginata) in the form of a flower very much resembles a giant viola "Pansies" or a greatly enlarged evergreen begonia flower. Usually breeders tend to create tuberous begonias as terry as possible. But in this case, the originators apparently decided to play on originality.

Begonia "Crisp Marginata" absolutely non-terry variety with one row of petals. The main difference between the hybrid is a wide wavy border along the edge of the corrugated flower. Sometimes this variety is also called "Flamenco" due to the similarity of the petals with bright robes, decorated with ruffles, of Spanish dancers.

Thanks to the thick massive petals, it seems that her flowers are cast from wax. In total, there are two shades in the series: sunny yellow with a red border ("Crispa Marginata Yellow-Red") and pure white with bright red "ruffles" ("Crispa Marginata White-Red") The transition to a bright border does not occur abruptly, but passing through the shading area of a whitened red color, it looks very impressive. The diameter of the flower is an average of 12 centimeters. Bush height up to 20 centimeters.

Begonia "Crispa Marginata" white-red (Begonia Crispa Marginata White-Red). Begonia "Marble" (Begonia Marmorata).

Begonia "Marble" (Marmorata) in the pictures in the catalogs has very bright delicious flowers resembling a festive salute. On a white background of petals - numerous strokes and strokes of bright scarlet color. The carved edges of the petals give an additional resemblance to the fireworks. But what is wrong with this elegant variety?

But the fact is that no matter how much I try to tame marble begonia, it annually produced absolutely non-double flowers. A similar situation developed for all familiar growers. In the best case, the flowers turned out to be semi-double (as the yellow center was exposed, the middle was exposed). Thus, the real begonia of Marmorat turned out to be very far from the one we saw in the picture.

Moreover, its characteristic marbling really looked untidy, as if the flower was accidentally smeared with paint. But this, of course, is a matter of taste, and perhaps someone will find its originality beautiful. The flowers of this begonia are medium-sized - up to 12 centimeters, the height of the bush is up to 25 centimeters, its shape is spreading, it requires garter.

The disadvantages of Begonia Crisp Marginata and Marble: non-double flowers, specific appearance.

Dear readers! Perhaps you grow some interesting tuberous begonias, which I did not mention in my article. Share your experience! I would be grateful for the feedback and comments.
