Autumn in the garden: getting ready for the next season

Autumn in the garden is not only beautiful, but also quite troublesome. There is a lot of things to be managed and a lot to think about - both how the trees and shrubs prepare for the cold weather will determine their health and yield.

Autumn in the garden: getting ready for the next season.

Rule number 1. Cleanliness

The first rule of a healthy garden is autumn cleaning. What needs to be cleaned in the garden? Fallen leaves, branches, carrion. They need to not only be scooped up in heaps, but laid in compost, and removed from diseased trees and shrubs completely outside the territory, because all this is a source of disease for the next season.

Mummified fruits remain unnoticed by many gardeners. But in vain! They also hibernate pests. And despite the fact that getting them can be quite difficult, you still need to try to do this.

Rule number 2. Sanitary pruning

In fact, this measure complements the first rule, since sanitary pruning is nothing more than the removal of diseased branches from the site, and as a consequence, pests of branches. However, in addition to diseased branches from plants, it is necessary to cut off broken branches, as well as those that thicken the crown.

In shrubs, however, everything else that grows to the ground needs to be removed. The shoots rubbing on the soil will still not give a full-fledged harvest next year, and if they spoil, then the berries on them will be dirty and prone to disease damage.

Rule number 3. Forming Cut

Along with sanitary pruning, it would be good to immediately form and rejuvenate the pruning on shrubs such as gooseberries and currants. These cultures begin to bloom in spring early, therefore it is more convenient to form them in the autumn, after the end of leaf fall.

We carry out shaping and sanitary scraps.

Not afraid of late fall pruning and honeysuckle, lemongrass, actinidia, viburnum, raspberries, blackberries and cover grapes.

Rule number 4. Wound healing

It will not be superfluous to inspect the trees and for the subject of gum-detection. Most often, it manifests itself on cherries, cherries, apricots, plums and peaches. The formed influxes must be removed to a living tissue with a sharp knife, the bark in their place should be cleaned and covered with garden varnish or nigrol putty (70% of nigrol mixed with 30% of furnace ash).

Rule number 5. Protection of the stem from frost and burns

A very important agricultural technique is autumn whitewashing. Trees whitened since autumn receive not only disinfection of the surface part of the trunk, but also protection from winter and early spring burns.

Whitewashing is necessary when setting the temperature in the region of +3 ° C, on a dry sunny day. It is necessary to whiten with a lime solution: 2 kg of hydrated lime per 10 l of water + 300-400 g of copper sulfate + 50-100 g of casein glue (the resulting composition should correspond to the density of sour cream).

Apply the mixture with a simple straw brush, from the base of the trunk to a height of about 30 cm of the first order skeletal branches (all together it is about 1 meter above the ground).

Rule number 6. Moisture charging irrigation

An important event of the fall is the moisture-charging irrigation of the garden. Many neglect it, relying on autumn rains, and it is necessary not only to water the trees for the winter, but also to increase their resistance to frost, to ensure full growth of the root system, therefore, natural rainfall is not a substitute for it.

The time for this agricultural reception comes when leaf fall occurs. Somewhere this is the last decade of September (northern and middle gardening zones), somewhere - the end of October (southern).

Average indicators of watering rates are about 10-15 buckets per 1 sq. M. on well-structured soils, under the tree trunk circle, and about 6 - under shrubs. On light soils and with regular garden irrigation, this volume can be reduced.

Caution should be taken in water-charging irrigation with close occurrence of groundwater, and where their level is close to 0.5 m, it is better to abandon it altogether.

We prepare for the winter plants that require shelter.

Rule number 7. Shelter of plants for the winter

In regions with difficult climatic conditions, care must be taken to ensure that plants resistant to frost can survive the winter. To do this, grapes, figs, and in some areas raspberry bushes are bent to the ground and covered with spruce branches, fallen leaves, non-woven materials, earth, snow ... The currants and gooseberries are mulched high, up to 12-15 cm.

Rule number 8. Clean inventory only

An obligatory rule for a good gardener is pre-winter maintenance of equipment. The rake, chopper, shovels, forks, pruning shears, garden saws should be kept clean, so they must be thoroughly washed, dried, if necessary, adjusted, disinfected with a 5% potassium permanganate solution and grease the cutting parts with machine oil.
