The smell of raspberries for me is firmly connected with my childhood - my grandmother's gentle hands and amazingly tasty jam, which was given out with teaspoons and only during a cold. Even then, I dreamed that I had a lot of raspberries. My dream has come true, every year I collect a double crop. The first - with ordinary raspberries and distillations of the second year of repair. And in the fall - the second - 3-5 cups a day from repairing first years. Through trial and error, I determined how to achieve a good harvest and preserve raspberries during the harsh winters of the Volga.

Important rules for preparing raspberries for winter

The raspberry varieties that I grow

The most common garden raspberries are unpretentious, tenacious and constantly striving to occupy new territories. From the rhizome, new shoots appear in abundance. They gradually grow, if you do not limit the growth of culture to a sheet of slate or iron dug in the ground.

Before forming a new trench for raspberries, I vertically dig a board to a depth of about 40 cm. It prevents the rhizomes from spreading, and the shoots are regularly cut, regardless of the season.

I have several raspberry varieties growing on my site that have been rigorously selected according to the “I want it like that” principle. Each type is tasty and has its own characteristics. Among my favorite varieties, early, large-fruited, late, and repair ones were selected.

  1. Raspberry "Hussar" has conical dark red berries that have been sung since July. The application is universal, very good in jam and freezing. The bushes are tall, require garters to support.
  2. Variety "Kirzhach" - unpretentious, resistant to most pests. Fruits in late July-August, the return of the harvest is friendly. Perfect for jam and jam. In a few days, a good portion for canning is recruited.
  3. Raspberry "Ruby giant" liked for large fruits with a slight sour taste. It is a pity that by the fourth year she significantly chopped. Probably somewhere I did not finish.
  4. The Atlant variety tolerates frosts perfectly even without snow shelter.
  5. Raspberry "Sweet Yellow" - afraid of frost, but with proper care produces a yield of 2.5-3 kg per bush.

A year ago, she ventured to plant Black Diamond aronia. I was surprised by the taste - almost without acid, the size was not impressive. While I left, I will look at its development.

I tried to choose not only garden, but also repairing varieties of raspberries. Of these, she preferred the Monomakh Hat, Hercules, and the Orange Miracle.

Red and yellow varieties planted on opposite sides, giving them the sunniest places on the site. At the same time I use the fence as a support and protection from the wind.

Features of autumn care for raspberries depend on its type, the main difference is in the timing of pruning and preparation for winter.

The main differences in the care of regular and repair raspberries

Features of autumn care for raspberries depend on its type, the main difference is in the timing of pruning and preparation for winter.

I prune garden raspberries after fruiting. I remove the shoots of the second year at the root, I thin out the first-year-olds. The peculiarity of this species is its tendency to overgrow, so it is necessary to cut excess shoots thickening raspberry bush throughout the season.

Repairing varieties have no such problem. There, to share the distillation with neighbors, you have to patiently wait for it to appear. In the fall, pruning is delayed until the end of the second fruiting. In some varieties, it lasts until the first frost, which makes it difficult to determine the timing of pruning.

For any raspberry, autumn events are important, allowing the bushes to successfully winter and quickly get out of hibernation in the spring.

Pruning raspberries in autumn

The most important phase of care. If you ignore it, then the berries will gradually become smaller, and their number will significantly decrease. There are serious differences in the timing and methods of pruning garden and remont raspberries.

Pruning raspberries

It begins to bloom in the second year and, after fruiting, is cut to the root, giving way to new shoots. In autumn, up to 8-10 shoots per 1 m² are mercilessly thinned out.

By the way, the end of September until October 15 is considered a good time for planting new bushes. So, if the neighbors asked to share, do not be greedy. It is enough to pry off the selected process with a shovel, chop it off from the main rhizome and give it through the fence, parting with a kind word.

Sick, weak, damaged stems are completely cut out. In the first year, the tops are shortened by about 1/3 of the height.

Important: barren trunks are cut flush with the ground. You can not leave hemp, parasites will begin to nest in them.

Pruning raspberry raspberries

For this type of raspberry, it is important to determine how many crops you want to get from it per season. Unlike ordinary, a remontant is able to bear fruit twice a season. First, the shoots of the second year give fruit, and by autumn, ovaries form on annuals.

If you want to achieve a massive collection of berries, then all distillations under the root are cut off. But then the meaning of the repairing look is lost. The harvest will please, but it is 2 weeks late.

If you want to enjoy raspberries all summer until the first frosts, you will have to do selective pruning. After the second year of fruiting, the stems are removed. Distinguishing them is very simple. They are the thickest and begin to dry by October. In the first year, I cut the tops. Fruits on them will no longer be tied, flower stalks will begin to form on the lateral processes, which will go from the main trunk in early spring and give the first early harvest.

The optimum time for pruning raspberry raspberries for central Russia falls at the beginning and middle of October. With a favorable forecast for a warm autumn, it can be carried out in 20 numbers.

If it is necessary to achieve a massive collection of berries of remont raspberries, then all the root distillations are cut off.

Raspberry top dressing in the fall

For raspberries, I use an alternation of organic and mineral fertilizers. I do not focus much attention on this, since initially raspberries can grow on very poor rocky soils. But if you want to take an enviable crop next year, you still have to feed it.

In autumn, potash and phosphorus fertilizers are preferred. They enhance the immunity of the plant, create a supply of nutrients for the next season, increase the chances of a good wintering.

It’s convenient for me to work with monophosphate. It already contains both elements, it is enough to make 35-40 grams per plant. You can also use superphosphate in conjunction with potassium sulfate at 40 and 20 grams per 1 bush, respectively.

I use organics as a mulch, covering a trench with raspberries after pruning with a peat pillow. Overripe manure I bring in every 2-3 years with a thin layer, be surely digging the ground. He warms, and in the spring gives the necessary top dressing. You can use compost at the rate of a bucket per 1 square meter.

Harvesting near raspberries

When the leaves from the bushes begin to fall, I want to be lazy and leave everything as it is. This cannot be done. Fungi, bacterial rot, and all kinds of pests joyfully breed in the raw mass. New varieties of raspberries were created with a high level of immunity, however, it is not necessary to create the prerequisites for the development of diseases.

After trimming, all the garbage is carefully cleaned and must be burned away from the raspberry, preferably in an iron barrel. Then I use ashes for feeding.

After clearing the debris, I must dig the soil shallow with a pitchfork. At a depth of 15-20 cm, winter minks arrange pests, they must be destroyed, otherwise no spraying will help.

For winter, it is useful to mulch raspberries with organics.

Treatment of bushes from pests and diseases

Many insects want to enjoy raspberries. Most often you have to deal with such uninvited guests:

  • weevil;
  • raspberry beetle;
  • stem fly;
  • mole;
  • glass;
  • galitsa;
  • aphid;
  • scoop.

After pruning, it is worth processing the garden of your choice with Aktara, Karbofos, and Vertimek solutions. They will destroy pests and their larvae on the shoots left for the winter.

From common diseases, raspberries will be protected by treatment with a 3% Bordeaux mixture.

It is important to choose a dry sunny day without wind for treatment against pests and diseases.

Raspberry frost protection

Winters in the Volga region are characterized by severe frosts down to -30 ... -38 ° С, which last for 2-3 weeks. For cropped raspberries, they are not afraid, and the remaining first-year distillations can suffer.

I bend them to the ground by about 30-40 cm and fix them with wire or forks from bent reinforcement. After the snow falls, I go out with a shovel and throw a snowdrift higher on the raspberries. Additionally, I’m not harboring, these measures are enough.

By the way, the neighbor, looking at my ritual dances in the raspberry, has been smiling slyly for several years and just mows his raspberries under the root. Common scythe. Moreover, in the spring she also throws out forcing together and begins to bloom. But my crop ripens earlier and the berries are much larger.

What to do, you decide. I pay close attention to raspberries and carefully prepare them for winter. Simply, I really love these fragrant berries and do not want to lose my bushes in the frosty winter.

I wish you to keep raspberry bushes unharmed and enjoy the spring of friendly ovary of your favorite childhood berries!
