Garden strawberries, or strawberries, as we used to call it, is one of the early fragrant berries that summer generously bestows on us. How happy we are for this crop! In order for the “berry boom” to be repeated every year, we need to take care of the berry bushes in the summer (after the end of fruiting). The laying of flower buds, from which the ovaries will form in the spring, begins approximately 30 days after the end of fruiting (the exception is the repairing strawberry, whose flower buds are constantly laid). Our task is to properly influence this process with proper care and top dressing.

How to care for strawberries after fruiting

After harvesting the berries, it is necessary to remove leaves from the bushes that have signs of infection with diseases and pests, as well as mechanical damage. If there is a need for rejuvenation of the beds, then you can leave 1-2 the strongest antennae, which are slightly sprinkled with earth to form the root system, and the rest removed.

If the site is severely affected by pests and diseases, it is recommended to completely mow the foliage at a height of 5-7 cm from the surface. Pruning is always a big stress for plants and top dressing immediately after it is unlikely to be appropriate.

It is important to remove from the garden all cut leaves of strawberries with signs of disease or pest damage and burn. Then in a season your beds will look healthier.

After mowing, it is necessary to treat the area with permitted fungicides from diseases and insecticides from pests. The period immediately after fruiting is the best time for these types of treatments, because it will be too late to do this already in a month (during the laying of the future harvest).

There are a large number of such drugs. Here is some of them:

  • fungicides: Bordeaux mixture, "Fitosporin", "Colloidal sulfur", "Fundazole", "Chorus", "Alirin B";
  • insecticides: "Karbofos", "Fosbetsid", "Inta-vir."
If strawberry leaves are affected by diseases or pests, it is better to cut off almost the entire green mass after fruiting.

Fertilizing is an important part of strawberry care after fruiting. The quality of the crop depends on how strawberry care will be throughout the summer season. Strawberry dressing is carried out 4 times during the growing season.

During the formation of flower buds of the next year (July-August), wild strawberries need to be fed at least once.

Removable strawberries are fed every 10-14 days during the season.

All summer residents can be divided into three groups:

  • supporters of organic dressing;
  • Supporters of fertilizing with mineral fertilizers;
  • summer residents who use both approaches on their site.

Next, we consider various methods of fertilizing strawberries.

Organic strawberry dressing

Ash

Popular top dressing for berry and vegetable crops. Ash saturates the soil with trace elements, protects against pests and helps restore leaf mass.

To protect and nourish the roots, it is necessary to add compost or humus for each plant mixed with ash (approximately a handful per bush).

You can pour strawberries under the root with a solution of ash with water. To do this, pour 1 liter of boiling water 250 g of ash and let it brew. Dilute the resulting mixture in 10 l of water.

Chicken droppings

It is necessary to breed chicken droppings in a bucket of water about 1:10 or 1:15. The resulting mixture is watered garden strawberries along the rows so that there is no oversaturation with a solution of soil near the roots.

This procedure must be carried out after rain or after good watering. If top dressing has got on the leaves, it is necessary to rinse them with clean water from a watering can.

Green manure

To prepare this type of fertilizing, weeds that grow on your site are suitable. They fill a large container with greens (at least a bucket) and fill it with water. Perfect for this nettle, wood lice, dandelion leaves, quinoa and other weeds.

Insist green fertilizer for 7-14 days (depending on the weather), not forgetting to stir from time to time. Specific odors will come from the resulting mass, so it is better to put the container away from home.

On day 10-14, you can start feeding strawberries. To do this, dilute the infusion with water in a ratio of 1: 9 and watered under the root of the plant.

Mullein Solution

This type of fertilizer for garden strawberries is similar to chicken manure. It is necessary to dilute the mullein with water 1:15. Leave the resulting mixture for 10-15 days to ferment, so that uric acid, which can burn the roots of the plant, has evaporated.

After 2 weeks, mix the resulting mixture with ash (add 10 tbsp of ash to 10 liters). This top dressing is combined with strawberry watering. Fertilize in pre-prepared grooves along a row of berry bushes at the rate of 1 bucket per 3 m of row.

Fertilizing strawberries with garden fertilizers

Supporters of mineral fertilizers know that in order to regrow leaf mass after pruning, it is necessary to feed strawberries with nitrogen. But the main thing here is not to overdo it.

Excessive application of nitrogenous fertilizers after fruiting can lead to the development of powerful leaves, increased growth of mustaches, and the laying of flower buds will not occur or will be inferior.

Ammonium nitrate

Dilute the solution in the calculation of 10 g of saltpeter per 10 l of water and water the plants without falling onto strawberry leaves to prevent burns.

For the successful formation of flower buds of the next season, garden strawberries need to be fed with phosphorus-potassium fertilizers.

Special mineral fertilizers

For the successful formation of flower buds next season, garden strawberries need to be fed with phosphorus-potassium fertilizers. The modern market offers many special mineral fertilizers for strawberries. These fertilizers, if applied in the fall, make it possible to better prepare the plant for wintering.

For instance:

  • "Fertica autumn" - complex mineral fertilizer with a high content of phosphorus and potassium.
  • Novofert - universal complex fertilizer, which is well suited for strawberries.
  • "Potassium humate" - used for strawberries, usually twice: after fruiting and in mid-September. Fertilizer positively affects the development of the root system, the laying of flower buds and the restoration of berry bushes.
