Garden Blueberry - Forest Miracle

Garden blueberry is a relatively new berry culture in the garden, and not every gardener grows it, but in vain. It can grow not only on fertile soil, but also on moist, swampy areas, that is, where usually fruit trees and berry crops almost never take root. Moreover, it does not require particularly difficult care.

General information about garden blueberries

In terms of yield and berry size, garden blueberries are far superior to their forest relative. Each bush is strewn with fruits that taste like wild berries.

Blueberries are long-lived in the garden. It grows well and bears fruit up to 50-60 years, and gives the first crops already in the 4th-5th year. The berries are collected in a brush and after ripening do not fall off for a long time, so they are easy to collect. Do not just forget about the birds: they also love them.

Blueberries are eaten fresh, they also boil unusually tasty jam, compote, etc.

Garden blueberry care

Due to the fact that the root system of blueberries is fibrous, they systematically loosen the soil to a shallow depth and add peat or vegetable humus or old sawdust with a layer of 10 cm. If the soil is dry or hot in summer without rain, the blueberries are abundantly watered by sprinkling. During the flowering period, watering can only be done under the root.

Blueberries are fed 2 times per season.

The first dressing is carried out before flowering: 1 tablespoon of liquid potassium humate, sodium humate and fertilizer with trace elements in 10 l of water; consumption - 10-15 liters of solution per 1 plant.

The second top dressing is done during the setting of berries: 2 tablespoons of the Berry fertilizer and 1 tablespoon of the Ideal and the Nursing fertilizers per 10 liters of water; consumption - 20 liters of solution per bush. The “breadwinner” can be replaced with a nitrophos (also 1 tablespoon per 10 liters of water).

The lack of nutrients in the soil is compensated by foliar dressing before and after flowering: 1 tablespoon of potassium humate and sodium humate per 10 liters of water.

Preventive pruning of blueberries is carried out from the 4-5th year. Dried, broken, diseased branches are removed. Subsequently, old branches are cut that do not give growth and almost do not bear fruit. Rejuvenated by root shoots.
