Zantedesia - A beautiful and interesting plant of the Aroid family. Its Latin name is 'Zantedeschia', and it is popularly referred to as the "white winged", "aronnik" or "calla". This confusion arose due to the fact that previously some species from the genus Zantedeskia were included in the independent genus Aronnik and Calla. By the way, Calla (Calla) includes only one species in its genus - the Wingfly. To grow this flower is not difficult if you have a great desire. But first you need to decide what kind of calla you want to get.

Modern varieties of Zantedescia

On the shelves of flower shops you can see modern varieties of zantedescia that amaze with their amazing beauty and grace: tall (up to 1.5 meters) plants with white flowers, obtained from Zantedesia Ethiopian (Zantedeschia aethiopica), and not tall (up to 50 cm) forms with pleasantly smelling flowers of various colors, descendants Zantedesci Elliott (Zantedeschia elliottiana) having golden yellow flowers, and Zantedescian Reman (Zantedeschia rehmannii) with pink-red flowers.

Caring for the Zantedescu at home

Some people, having bought zantedescia, put it in the best place, water it abundantly and generously feed it. But over time, the plant fades, its leaves turn pale, become small, and in September they die off completely. What happens to this beauty? Nothing really wrong. It’s just that the flower began a period of rest. If you carefully examine the root system (among the descendants of the Ethiopian calla, the aerial part is the rhizome, and the plants obtained from Zantedeskii Eliott and Reman have the tubers), then you can understand that the flower has not died, and its rhizome or tubers are alive and healthy.

At home Zantedeskii, the period of rest falls at the end of spring and mid-autumn. At this time, the flower is not fed, and watering is rare. A new development cycle begins in December, new leaves appear and by spring the plant blooms.

The white-flowered Zantedesky has a thick creeping rhizome, in the flower pot it should not be located deep. Therefore, the dishes for planting should not be high, and its diameter should be selected in proportion to the size of the rhizome. The plant for its active growth requires a lot of water, which must always be in the pan. It is advisable to choose a pot for planting a tuberous Zantedeskia of medium size, with a volume of 1.5-2 liters.

Drainage (expanded clay, river sand, pebbles) is laid at the bottom of the pot with a layer of 4-5 cm. Then, up to half the capacity, nutrient soil moistened with a fertilizer solution is added for better rooting of the bulb. The tuber is placed in the center, and sprinkled with a small (1-2 cm) layer of soil, which is slightly compacted and not moistened.

The substrate can be taken acidic on the basis of decayed needles with the addition of complex fertilizers. Watering begins when new leaves appear. It is more convenient to water from the pallet with warm filtered water. When the buds begin to form (December-February), the flower must be illuminated using phyto-lamps. Plant nutrition is carried out once a week with tuberous bulb fertilizer, a solution of boric acid or mullein infusion with the addition of nitrous potassium or superphosphate. It will stimulate the emergence of better subsequent peduncles and prolonged flowering.

The ideal location of Zantedesia is a windowsill with diffused light. Once a week, the pot with the plant must be turned in the direction of light to evenly illuminate the leaves. Transplantation is carried out in 5-6 years.

Reproduction of Zantedesia

Zantedescia is mainly propagated by offspring, which grow in large numbers near an adult plant. They are separated after a period of rest. Siblings are transplanted into the substrate from humus and sod land. A little river sand is added to the mixture. Plants grown in this way will bloom in 2 years. It is possible to propagate Zantedesia with seeds, but only professional flower growers are taken to obtain new plants in this way.

Features of growing Zantedeskia

The flower prefers to be in the shade, where the sun can appear in the evening. The pot should have spacious parameters, preferably above 60 cm and a diameter of 20 cm. If fertilizing is done on time, the plant will grow faster. To do this, you can make a small groove along the edge of the pot and pour in it the available organics, for example, peel from fruits: apples, bananas, kiwi, husk of seeds, tea brewing. Sprinkle organic matter with a substrate and pour well with mineral fertilizers dissolved in water.

The top layer of the substrate from time to time needs to be replaced with a nutritious one. The procedure should be carried out carefully so as not to damage the roots.

Zantedesia loves moisture, so the soil must be constantly kept in slightly moist and not allowed to dry out.

The white and color of Zantedesia require a different approach. Plants with white flowers do not drop leaves and like a more moist soil. Colored “callas” drop leaves, prefer bright light and are not demanding on substrate moisture.
